Movie Review: Lost in Translation(2003) by Sofia Coppola

Finally got to watch this cult favorite, even though 10 years late. Word of mouth always have been incredible about this movie and now I can too vouch for its worthiness. Also my first Sofia Coppola movie at that. Hopefully I can catch Bling Ring that's going to be released very soon.

In terms of reviewing this movie, not much happens to really delve into. I think that's why it works so well; because of its earnest simplicity. The story about two lost souls(respectively married) meeting at a strange land, away from home, could only mean possible shallow interactions and then moving on with their respective spouse. Yet Sofia kept it rather cool and did not delve into what would have been the obvious. She rather played around with great character development. As if you are with them and enjoying each of the warm and delightful moment that the two leads ignite whenever they meet. One might show their disapproval with the age differences but after recently reading Running with Scissors, age really is a number. The chemistry alone was good enough for the whole audience to forget whatever Bill or Scarlet might be in terms of age. It was beautifully shot to say the least. 2013 and I think everyone would still mistake this film to have been released just this year. Japan truly has always been ahead of time with their style, tech and more. Sofia also knew her way around. Doesn't seem like someone got so many outstanding shots based purely on luck and no experience. The music that went with the movie was also pretty damn fantastic.

One thing I really admired was how Sofia avoided any sexual means to make the leads come closer(though they do kiss towards the end). She chose a more meaningful path that I truly think worked beautifully. I would highly recommend this to be watched with someone you know who enjoys a slow yet fulfilling movie! This quote was the highlight amid so many other equally great moments.

9.5/10(I might as well give 10)
